Anyone who was around in the 90s and played PC games knows all about Duke Nukem. The gun-toting action hero is known for his iconic look, deep voice, and spouting out one-liners. Its over-the-top nature makes the franchise something impossible to take too seriously, but even so, fans of the series may be worried about whether the movie will be done right.

One person hoping for the best with this new Duke Nukem film is WWE wrestler John Cena. The film’s producers have finally confirmed that Cena is who they’re going with to play the role of the titular action star. In a recent interview, Cena himself also reveals he feels very honored about landing the role. However, he wants to be careful with it, so as to do right by the character and the franchise.

“I think that’s the direct attachment and I’m very honored to be attached to that but that is a very fragile franchise. That was one that was very timeline specific, that is 1990s to the hilt,” Cena tells ScreenRant. “So, once again, it reflects upon story. The story has to come in dead-on balls, man. Like it has to come in told correct, told in a palatable sense for this generation, which you’re walking on eggshells…you can’t not be Duke Nukem, but you can’t make the wrong move…so I’m…what a blessing to be attached to that, a name like that, and I just hope development does the franchise justice.”

The Duke Nukem series saw three games release in the 90s. The franchise was revisited in 2011 with Duke Nukem Forever, which wasn’t quite as well-received. Hopefully, the upcoming film will go down better with the fans.
