When The Simpsons first premiered on Fox in 1989, nobody could have predicted the success the animated series would achieve. The series, created by Matt Groening, has since been on the air for a whopping 29 seasons. Along the way, the show has broken many TV records, as you could expect. But this Sunday’s new episode will officially mark another major victory for the show.
Currently, Fox has aired 635 episodes of The Simpsons. That ties it with the classic western series Gunsmoke as the current record holder for having the most episodes in a prime-time scripted series. The next episode will mark 636 episodes of The Simpsons, means that the show is continuing to break records after nearly three decades.
According to The New York Post, Sunday’s episode, Sunday’s episode will feature a plot with Grampa becoming deathly ill, and believing death is near, he reveals a huge family secret to Homer. Executive producer Al Jean says the episode will fall back to the show’s roots with “a small touching story reminiscent of the early seasons, with a couple of Easter eggs for fans.”
So many of us have grown up with The Simpsons and by this point, it’s hard to imagine the show coming to an end. Obviously, an end game will have to come eventually. But for big fans of the series such as myself, that day doesn’t seem to be coming anytime soon.
