Boba Fett LucasFilms

The long-rumored Boba Fett movie looks like it’s finally going ahead, according to an exclusive report over at The Hollywood Reporter.

It seems LucasFilms is developing a series of spin-off movies centered on the Star Wars Universe’s biggest and best-loved characters, including Obi-Wan Kenobi and an epic 3-part Jar Jar Binks origin story (okay, that one’s a lie). The first in the pipeline is a look at the adventures of everyone’s favorite bounty hunter who seemingly met his fate at the hands of a dreaded Sarlaac in Return of the Jedi.

The film will be written and directed by James Mangold – of Wolverine and Walk the Line fame. Wolverine co-writer Simon Kinberg will also assist with the script duties. No news yet on who will be donning the famous helmet, or whether they’ll pull a Sylvester Stallone and insist on removing it, a la the 1995 crapathon Judge Dredd.

Plot details appear to have been frozen safely within a carbonite block, but there are certainly plenty of angles the filmmakers can take when approaching the story. They could retcon the origin story already told in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, or they could pick up where we last left him – deep in the belly of the Sarlaac. The most obvious choice though would be to make this a post-prequels pre-original trilogy movie, as little is known about the bounty hunter’s life before he came under the employ of Jabba the Hutt. Star Wars fans are probably already au fait with the long-running comic book series, so there’s no doubt a ton of ideas floating around the internet already.

Currently, Disney is sitting pretty after the somewhat surprising success of its Han Solo origin flick, Solo: A Star Wars Story, which has had fans divided ever since the first trailer. No doubt talk of a Boba Fett film will have much the same result, as fans argue over whether his success and popularity as a character is reliant on his very limited time on screen. Simply put, there’s no pleasing everyone.

We’ll have more on this when it breaks.
