Howard the Duck movie Lea Thompson
Universal Pictures

There are fewer things in this world that would make me happier than a modern-day Howard the Duck movie, and it looks like that could become a reality, thanks in no small part to the original movie’s female lead. According to an interview with Inquisitr, Lea Thompson went on record saying she intends to personally pitch an idea for Howard’s big cinematic return directly to Marvel Studios and would want to direct the movie herself.

Thompson, who also starred in Back to the Future, appeared opposite the original dude-in-a-suit version of the character in the live-action 1986 movie. She was meeting with Inquisitr to discuss her directorial debut, The Year of Spectacular Men, but the conversation soon turned to her 5 minutes of fame as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When quizzed if she’d ever like to appear in a modern comic book movie, the actress professed her love for Howard and her intentions to offer her services as a director in an all-new Howard the Duck Marvel movie.

Thompson acknowledged the limitations the team behind the 1986 movie faced, especially as the superhero genre was nothing like it is today. I mean, can you imagine Marvel making anything that relied as much on practical effects as Howard the Duck did?

Whether Thompson was playing with us or not is anybody’s guess, but it’s certainly caused a bit of a stir on the internet and lit a fire in this writer that can only be extinguished if this whole thing turns out to be real.

What do you make of Lea Thompson’s comments? Is she playing with us, or do you think a new Howard the Duck movie is imminent? Have your say in the comments below, and don’t forget to check us out on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
