Whether you love or hate Chucky, you’ve got to give the killer doll some credit. With practically every major franchise from every film genre undergoing the reboot treatment, little Chucky has somehow held on for three decades strong, from 1988’s Child’s Play to 2017’s Cult of Chucky. With a rumored TV series from Don Mancini in the works, it seemed pretty clear we would see more of Chucky and Tiffany.
With this in mind, today’s Child’s Play news from The Hollywood Reporter is a bit shocking, to say the least. MGM is interested in rebooting the original film, putting a new spin on the story, and the project has already entered pre-production. IT producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith have both signed on to work on the film.
The studio is fast-tracking the project, meaning it might not be all that long before we see the film hit the screen. Kung Fury 2 writer Tyler Burton Smith penned the screenplay, and Polaroid director Lars Klevberg will be helming the film. As the original movie was produced under MGM’s United Artists banner, this reboot is being called a “homecoming” of sorts.
Of course, exact details about the plot are not yet known, aside from the film being a direct remake of the original film from Tom Holland. We can assume a possessed doll will start killing people in his quest to transfer his soul into that of a human child. There’s no way to know if the doll in this movie will be called Chucky as well. But I say they might as well change the name unless they plan on using Brad Dourif again — there will always be only one Chucky.
There’s no tentative release date yet. Stay tuned for more details about MGM’s upcoming Child’s Play remake. Do you see this as a good idea or bad idea? Let us know how you feel in the comments below!
