Blumhouse / Universal

Every horror movie fan certainly has this year’s new Halloween movie on their radar. Directed by David Gordon Green with a script co-written by Green and Danny McBride, the sequel will take the series back to its roots. With John Carpenter‘s original serving as the new movie’s biggest inspiration, we can expect to see many fun Easter eggs which serve to pay tribute to the 1978 film.

One such Easter egg has already been spotted in a recently released promo image. Released by Entertainment Weekly, the photo shows Jamie Lee Curtis and Judy Greer in character as returning protagonist Laurie Strode and her daughter. The two are clearly terrified of the masked maniac terrorizing Haddonfield, which is the focus of the picture. But a keen Halloween fan was paying closer attention, and spotted something in the background that looked very familiar.

Behind the horrified Strodes is a sombrero hanging on the wall. If you’re like me, you hardly even noticed it the first time you saw the image. However, as Lee McCoy on Twitter points out, that same sombrero can be seen hanging on the wall in Laurie’s bedroom, back in the 1978 original. Clearly, Laurie Strode is still holding onto the past, which also helps to explain why she’s still in Haddonfield, waiting for the day when Michael finally comes back home.

Nobody involved in the making of the film pointed out this reference. Rather, it was left for the fans to discover themselves. Best of all, this is merely a promo image, meaning there’s no telling how many fun Easter eggs and other references will be hidden in the film for us to find. Clearly, Green and company are huge Halloween fans, making the upcoming Blumhouse sequel even more promising.

Halloween will hit theaters everywhere on Oct. 19, 2018. I know you’ve seen it already, but watch the official trailer below!
