Set to release early next year, Capcom’s upcoming Resident Evil 2 remake has every fan of the franchise excited. The game will take the series back to its roots when it was at its most scary, before later titles detoured further from horror and more into action. Considering the anticipation, it’s obvious the game is going to be a big hit for Capcom, and the company has already made it clear they’re open to rebooting more classic titles.

But what about games that have already been remade? That brings us to the original Resident Evil, which was first released on the Sony PlayStation in 1996 before being rebooted on the Nintendo Gamecube in 2002. As it’s now been 16 years since the launch of the game, Game Informer asked Capcom director Kazunori Kadoi if they’d be open to remaking the remake – and he’s not ruling it out!

“Certainly enough time has passed that it wouldn’t be laughable to remake the remake. I personally think that would be an interesting thing to do,” explains Kadoi. Additionally, Kadoi was asked about a modern remake of Sweet Home, the original NES game which inspired Resident Evil. Unfortunately, that’s completely off the table as the company no longer has the rights to it.

While the idea of rebooting a reboot sounds bizarre at first, it’s something that actually would make sense in this case. By the time Capcom would get it released, it will be about two decades since that Gamecube game was launched. It would be incredible to see what that classic, original story could be done with today’s technology.

If Resident Evil 2 becomes the smash hit we’re all expecting it to, a new take on the original seems inevitable. Let’s just not forget a modern version of Nemesis while we’re at it. In the meantime, keep yourself psyched for RE2 by watching the preview video below!
