For most Halloween franchise fans, the best film in the series seems to be the 1978 original. Directed by John Carpenter, the film not only spawned an entire film series, but set the stage for the slasher film boom of the 1980’s. While each of the subsequent films have their own cult followings, none of the sequels seem to have quite garnered the love of Carpenter’s classic.
According to Carpenter himself, however, the new movie could in fact be the best sequel of the series yet. In a new preview clip from Universal, Carpenter is seen speaking about the movie alongside some clips of from the film. “This is as good as I’ve seen since we did the first movie,” the legendary director boldly declares in the video. That’s obviously one hell of an endorsement.
Star Jamie Lee Curtis is also featured in the clip, stressing how intense and brutal the film will be. Carpenter praises the scream queen’s return to the franchise, saying she’s just as perfect for the new Halloween as she was for Carpenter’s original. Finally, the ruthless and random nature of Michael Myers is highlighted, making “The Shape” scarier than ever. “He’s unpredictable – anyone could be next,” director David Gordon Green explains.
For me, it feels like everything has come full circle. While Donald Pleasence will be very much missed in the new Halloween, it seems like Laurie has essentially become the new Loomis. Of course, Laurie’s goal isn’t to try to reach Michael Myers – the survivor has been plotting her tormentor’s death for the past 40 years. Now that he’s come back home, will she finally get to kill him?
You can watch the preview clip below.
