When it was first reported that Jamie Lee Curtis was coming back to appear in a new Halloween film, we all knew it would do well. Because of the tremendous interest of the fans of the franchise, it’s clear that the film would make millions in ticket sales, as the return of Laurie Strode is a must-see event. Even considering this, however, the film may have surpassed the expectations from Blumhouse, as it’s on track to make some serious profit at the box office.
Deadline reports that David Gordon Green’s Halloween is slated to earn over $40 million at the domestic box office, with some estimates as high as $50 million. With Hollywood’s belief that R-rated horror films suffer in ticket sales, it’s nice to see such a strong forecast for Halloween. With the reviews coming out of TIFF being more than positive, the film is very likely to meet these numbers, if not go even higher.
This breaks the previous record set for the highest opening weekend in the series, should the estimates be accurate. Rob Zombie’s 2007 reboot pulled in around $26 million when it first premiered in theaters. This means that we’re looking at the new film potentially doubling the record, firmly establishing the modern day popularity of Halloween. Of course, it’s likely we’ll see Michael Myers return in more sequels after this. Could we be seeing the rise of a new slasher film boom? One can only hope.
You’ve seen it already, but you can take another look at the trailer for the upcoming film below. Halloween will be hitting theaters on Oct. 19.
