Horror mastermind John Carpenter still goes on tour as a composer, but the filmmaker is virtually retired as a director. His last film was the 2010 psychological horror, The Ward. Before that, Carpenter hadn’t helmed a movie since all the way back in 2001 with Ghosts of Mars. Needless to say, the legend’s filmmaking career has wound down quite a bit since the start of the new millennium.

Of course, Carpenter isn’t through working on films. He’s serving as the executive producer and composer for David Gordon Green’s Halloween, which hits theaters this month. But when it comes to sitting in the director’s chair, will we ever see another Carpenter-helmed film? In a recent interview with EW, the filmmaker and musician admits he’s all for directing another movie, so as long as it’s comfortable for him.

I would love to direct something, if it’s the right thing to do at my age. I’m not going to make another Thing, I’ll tell you that. I’m not going to the Arctic again. I’m not going to do that. I want to take it easy. I want to enjoy myself!

I’ve wanted to do something in Europe and I’ve wanted to do something in Venice. I haven’t gotten a story for it though. What a place! What a strange place! And Venice is sinking! Wow. But I don’t know. I’d love to do something in Europe. That would be fun to do. There are two important things in my life, though. Basketball, when the season starts, and video games. And to play video games you have to sit in a chair and not really get up and do anything. I love that. That’s my job now, to sit around and do nothing!

It seems we may one day see another film from Carpenter yet, so as long as the shoot isn’t stressful. The success of the new Halloween can only help the director with these endeavors. Listen to his score when the film hits theaters on Oct. 19.
