The Toronto After Dark Film Festival is returning to Toronto this week for its 13th year. The festival runs from October 11th till October 19th with all screenings taking place at the iconic Scotiabank Theater in downtown Toronto. The yearly festival plays host to horror-themed films from all around the world, as well as a handful of short films.
This year’s opening night films are Tigers Are Not Afraid, which has been described as a Del Toro-esque fairytale mix of Pans Labyrinth and City of God, and Black Fawn’s I’ll Take Your Dead from director Chad Archibald. Each film will also be paired with a short film, Echoes In The Ice will screen before Tigers Are Not Afraid and Deliverance before I’ll Take Your Dead.
Some of the other films set to screen during the nine-day festival include the highly anticipated zombie WW1 film, Overlord, the zombie musical Anna & The Apocalypse, and the closing Gala film You Might Be The Killer. The films I’m personally looking forward to most are Overlord, Anna & The Apocalypse, I Am A Hero, Prey, and Mega Time Squad.
On Sunday, October 14th, there’s the Canadian Shorts After Dark Showcase, an afternoon showing of a collection of local short films. These films include Bone Mother, Eden, Milk, Gemini, Glitter’s Wild Women, Split Decision, and Tick.
Toronto After Dark begins this week on Thursday, October 11th, and runs until the 19th. Tickets and the schedule are available on the website. Make sure to buy your tickets soon as they sell out fast every year. Trailers for the movies in this year’s festivals can be found on the website under each film.
