We have absolutely terrible news to report today, as TMZ is confirming that the legendary Stan Lee has passed away. Lee was transported from his home in Hollywood Hills this morning to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. It’s not yet clear what contributed to Lee’s death, as not all of the facts about the tragic situation have been made available. The legendary comic book writer, editor, and publisher was 95 years old.
Stan Lee is best known for pioneering Marvel Comics, serving for many years as its editor-in-chief. Along with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, Lee created many superheroes for Marvel who can still be seen in popular feature films to this day, in addition to ongoing comic book appearances. Some of the characters Lee helped to create include Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Doctor Strange, Daredevil, the X-Men, and Black Panther. Lee also had a hand in developing the characters of Ant-Man, Thor, and Iron Man with the help of co-writer Larry Lieber.
Because of his legendary status in the world of comic books, Lee could frequently be seen in special cameo appearances in Marvel-based movies. Fans would come to expect it, and searching for Lee became one of the funnest Easter eggs for people to watch out for. He could most recently be seen as a man walking his dog in this year’s Venom movie, with Tom Hardy in the titular anti-hero role.
Lee is survived by his daughter Joan. Last year, Lee’s wife Joan passed away after 69 years of marriage, making Lee a widower.
