The Ghostbusters franchise is currently stagnant, following the less-than-impressive reception of Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot. Although the movie made tons of money at the box office, it was incredibly expensive to produce, and the financial return wasn’t exactly what Sony had been hoping for. The film was widely-panned upon its premiere, and plans for a sequel were reportedly scrapped as the franchise went dormant again.
However, one of the stars of the original movies is actively working on making Ghostbusters 3, continuing the story established in the first two films. Speaking on The Big Interview with Dan Rather, Aykroyd says there’s a story in mind for another follow-up film to Ghostbusters 1 & 2, and the screenplay is currently being written. Because Harold Ramis passed away in 2014, the film would bring back the remaining lead actors from the film: Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Bill Murray.
“There is a possibility of a reunion with the three remaining Ghostbusters… It’s being written right now.”
“I think Billy will come. The story’s so good, even if he plays a ghost,” Aykroyd also says, in reference to Murray’s well-known reluctance to participate in Ghostbusters sequels. The details of the plot Aykroyd has in mind aren’t very clear, but he’s clearly confident Murray will be on board. It seems much more plausible now than in years before, as Murray did have a surprising cameo appearance in the 2016 film.

The first two movies were written by Ramis and Aykroyd. Sadly, with Ramis no longer with us, any kind of sequel will be missing a key component, both in the film and behind the scenes. Still, Ghostbusters 3 with the rest of the cast sounds very exciting. It would seem that now is as good a time as any to move forward with such a project, considering the latest trend in Hollywood to create new sequels for classic films.
