Fright Night Blu-ray

“Welcome to Fright Night. For real.”

My favorite vampire movie (and it’s not even close) is the 1985 classic Fright Night. Written and directed by Tom Holland (who would later write and direct the original Child’s Play), Fright Night starred William Ragsdale as Charley Brewster, a teenage boy who learns that a vampire (Jerry Dandrige, played magnificently by Chris Sarandon) has moved in next door. When nobody believes Charley, he is forced to turn to late-night TV horror movie host Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall) for help before Charley and his friends become Jerry’s next victims. The film combines interesting characters, humor, snappy dialogue, catchy tunes, and outstanding practical effects brilliantly. It is even better than I am making it sound.

For fans of Fright Night (which was remade in 2011 with Anton Yelchin and Colin Farrell), there has never been a proper Blu-ray release, an unthinkable crime against humanity. Well, finally the horror gods have answered our prayers, as Sony is set to release the definitive Blu-ray of this masterpiece. Along with the film itself, the disc will be loaded with features:

  • The 2016 mega-documentary You’re So Cool, Brewster!, an excellent 3+ hour retrospective previously available on disc and via streaming platforms
  • Two commentary tracks, one with stars Chris Sarandon and Jonathan Stark and another with stars William Ragsdale and Stephen Geoffreys, and effects guru Randall Cook. Both also feature director Tom Holland
  • A Fright Night reunion panel from 2008’s Fear Fest 2
  • A “Writing Horror” featurette with writer/director Holland
  • “From Apes to Bats,” a featurette on the late Roddy McDowall
  • “Choice Cuts” from Shock Till You Drop, with Holland and journalist Ryan Turek
  • Behind-the-scenes vignettes
  • Trailers

If you’ve never seen Fright Night, or if you’ve watched it about 50 times (like me), I would highly recommend this Blu-ray edition. It’s long, long overdue. I guess Sony just decided to let the vampires rest for a little while. Right, Charley?

Fright Night will be released on Blu-ray February 12th. Just in time for V-Day!
