The T-Virus will soon infect Netflix, as the streaming service is reportedly developing a Resident Evil TV series. According to Deadline, the scripted series will be a Netflix original from German studio Constantin Film, the company behind the Resident Evil movies with Milla Jovovich. No showrunner is yet attached to the upcoming series, and Netflix has not officially confirmed its development.
It’s not entirely clear what the plan is for the new Resident Evil story. According to the report, it will have the same basic plot of the 2003 movie and the original game it’s based on. It’s said that the series will “explore the dark inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation and the new world order caused by the outbreak of the T-virus.” Fans of the series can likely expect to see plenty of Easter eggs from the games and prior movies, even if the story is unconnected.
With each installment directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, the Resident Evil movie franchise consisted of six films. Beginning in 2003, the series came to a close with the 2016 sequel The Final Chapter. Overall, the film series was very successful at the box office, collectively pulling in over $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales. There’s obviously plenty of money to be made with the Resident Evil license, so it was only natural Constantin Film would want to produce more. It has since been reported that the franchise would be rebooted, and it now looks like that’s going to be in the form of a Netflix series as opposed to another movie.
Last month, 47 Meters Down director Johannes Roberts had signed on with Constantin to write and direct a Resident Evil reboot. It’s not yet clear if this was for a planned project that fell through, or if he’ll be involved in the Netflix series. The project is still in its early stages, but more details are likely to come soon.
