Are you interested in playing a tabletop game like Dungeons & Dragons and also love Stranger Things and/or ’80s nostalgia? If you answered yes, then you should definitely check out Dark Places & Demogorgons by Bloat Games. I want to preface this article by saying I’m not an employee of Bloat Games, but I am a huge fan of their games and was commissioned to write their free Holiday Special pdf.
Like D&D, all you need to play is the book, a set of polyhedral dice, and some friends. However, unlike D&D, in Dark Places & Demogorgons you play a high school student during the ’80s. As residents of J’town, a small Kentucky community plagued by disappearances and strange sightings, you and your classmates must do something to save your way of life. The police and other adults are clueless and Reverend Phillips has the town caught up in the Satanic Panic and another witch-hunt.
Dark Places & Demogorgons is a fantastic game that can be used to play different styles. You run it as Stranger Things, investigate mysteries like the gang in Scooby-Doo, or give J’town a Hellmouth and get into some ’80s Buffy The Vampire Slayer shenanigans.
The game has expansions, too. The Player Options & GM Guide adds new classes and magic to the game. The J’Town Setting Guide expands the default setting. If you want to add some Salem’s Lot or Lost Boys to your game, you can pick up the Vampire Sourcebook, while the Werewolf gives you what you need for some Teen Wolf and American Werewolf In London-style action. The truth is out there with The UFO Investigator’s Handbook and you can find out who you’re gonna call with The Ghost Hunter’s Handbook. Finally, coming off of a very successful Kickstarter, the soon-to-be-released Cryptid Manual adds a plethora of new legendary creatures to your game.
You can buy the game directly from the Bloat Games Store or pick up the pdfs at DriveThruRPG.com.
