Todd Phillips will direct an upcoming biopic about Hulk Hogan for Netflix, with Thor actor Chris Hemsworth starring as the legendary wrestling hero. Scott Silver will be writing the script, who previously worked with Phillips on Joker, this year’s supervillain origin story for DC.  This new Hogan film will be another kind of origin story, focusing on Hogan’s rise to fame and the birth of Hulkamania in the ’80s. It is not expected to touch on the wrestler’s years in WCW or the scandals from his personal life.

Hogan has been known across the world for decades now due to his work in the wrestling world. First becoming an international hero in the ’80s, Hogan had slain such mighty foes as Andre the Giant, King Kong Bundy, Randy Savage, and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper to become the most famous pro wrestler of all time. He would have two career resurgences in the following two decades, which included a run as a villain in WCW and another run as a hero in WWE. A member of the WWE Hall of Fame, Hogan remains one of the most popular wrestling personalities, although his days competing in the ring seem to be long behind him.

A biopic focusing on Hulk Hogan is perhaps long overdue. There have been many books and documentaries about Hogan’s work in WWE, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out as a feature film. As Hemsworth looks strikingly similar to a young Hulk Hogan, the lead role seems perfectly cast. No other names have yet been attached to the cast at this time.

No word yet on when we can see the movie premiere, as it’s still in the early stage of pre-production. More information should hopefully be coming out soon. For now, you can take a look at a recent appearance by Hogan on WWE programming, paying tribute to late announcer “Mean” Gene Okerlund.
