From 1968 until 1970, The Banana Splits Adventure Hour aired as a Saturday morning television program for kids. It featured the music of a band of animals consisting of Fleegle the beagle, Bingo the gorilla, Drooper the lion, and Snorky the elephant. Although kid-friendly, the animal musicians have always looked rather creepy, especially in retrospect. With this in mind, a new thriller is now in the works which will bring The Banana Splits back in a meta-horror story.
According to the official synopsis for The Banana Splits, the movie focuses on a young boy named Harley celebrating his birthday at a TV taping of The Banana Splits Adventure Hour with his family. Unfortunately, “things take an unexpected turn — and the body count quickly rises.” Harley, his family, and their new friends will have to try to find a way to escape the studio with their lives. It’s not clear whether something paranormal is involved or if the people inside the costumes have simply gone berzerk, but either way, it looks like we’re getting a movie about The Banana Splits killing people.
Starring in the film will be Finlay Wojtak-Hissong (The Kindness of Strangers) as Harley, with Dani Kind (Wynonna Earp) as Harley’s mother Beth and Steve Lund (Schitt’s Creek) as his father Mitch. The Vampire Diaries alum Sara Canning will also be in the film playing Rebecca, a television producer working in the studio. Danishka Esterhazy is directing, using a screenplay written by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas. Of course, all four members of The Banana Splits will be returning for the film as well.
The movie will first be made available on Warner Bros. Home Entertainment before having its TV premiere on Syfy later this year. If you’re not familiar with the show, you can watch the video below to see just how creepy it already is, even before its upcoming horror film adaptation.
