With MGM and Orion remaking the original Child’s Play movie, horror fans seem to be well divided on the issue. Some major fans of the ongoing Chucky franchise feel that the film is a slap in the face, as the original Chucky will soon return to continue that story in a Syfy television series. Meanwhile, others are excited to see the franchise trading in the comedy by returning to its more serious, horror-centric roots. Aubrey Plaza, one of the stars of the new film, represents the latter.

In a new interview with THR, Plaza opened up about her role in the new movie and what fans can expect from it. Promising a scarier experience for viewers compared to modern Chucky movies, the actress says the film is something ’80s horror fans will enjoy. She also revealed some new details about her version of Karen Barclay, hinting that this Karen will spend the bulk of the film feeling her son Andy is behind the killer doll’s atrocities.

From the interview:

“Buckle up. I love it so much. To me, the original is an iconic movie. I haven’t seen our film, just the trailer, but it’s a real throwback horror movie. It’s almost got a Spielbergian vibe to it. The reason I did it was for how beautiful the script was. It doesn’t feel like a hokey, shticky, campy movie. If you remember the original Child’s Play, it was a drama! It wasn’t that funny. As the franchise went on, it became something else. The remake really captures the original.

An evil murder doll? No. I play Karen, the mother, and I have less interaction with Chucky than the actor who plays my son does. I can’t reveal too much. We’re not supposed to talk about Chucky. It builds for Karen in a way that I’m interacting with Chucky by the end, but I’m mostly dealing with my son — who I almost believe is behind the mayhem. The horror of it all will be for the audience. For me, it’s more of a psychological thriller.

I would only do certain remakes. This is smart. The messaging behind the film is different. Technology becomes the villain. That’s a real thing that I can get behind. It scares the shit out of me.”

Those who choose to ignore the new film to focus solely on the upcoming Syfy series certainly have every right to do just that. For the rest of us, we can see the new Child’s Play when it hits theaters on June 21, 2019.
