We previously reported on the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie reboot from Sony Pictures and Mattel Films, and casting for the film’s lead characters is now in the works. TheWrap is reporting actor Noah Centineo is currently in negotiations to play the lead role of He-Man in the new movie, taking over the role previously played by Dolph Lundgren in the original live-action film from 1987. At this point, talks are still ongoing, and Centineo has not yet officially signed on.
Aaron and Adam Nee are directing the new movie, using a screenplay co-written with Matt Holloway and Art Marcum (Iron Man). The film is inspired by Mattel’s “Masters of the Universe” toy line from the ’80s, which featured heroes like He-Man, Man-at-Arms, Orko, Teela, and The Sorceress taking on the sinister Skeletor. The toy line was adapted into an animated series called He-Man and the Masters of the Universe in 1983, which in turn developed multiple animated specials. The live-action 1987 movie then followed from director Gary Goddard, using a script from David Odell. In addition to Dolph Lundgren, the movie’s cast included stars like Meg Foster, Courteney Cox, and Robert Duncan McNeill.
Centineo is best known for appearing in the Netflix romantic comedies To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, and also previously spent three seasons on the television series The Fosters. He will star in the upcoming comedy film The Stand-In as well as the upcoming Charlie’s Angels reboot. If he nabs the role of He-Man, however, that would seem to be the actor’s biggest role to date.
