Lionsgate, in partnership with Scottgames, Steel Wool Games, and Striker Entertainment, has announced that the immensely popular survival horror video game Five Nights at Freddy’s is getting adapted for virtual reality. Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted is coming to PSVR, Oculus, Steam, and HTC Vive in April and will feature new experiences that highlight the original game and each episode of the series.
Steel Wool Games is a leading VR developer known for projects such as the motion-physics game Bounce, educational simulator Mars Odyssey, turn-based strategy game QUAR: Battle for Gate 18, and more. In a statement, the company said: “We are huge fans of Five Nights at Freddy’s and also recognize the original games’ design is perfectly suited for virtual reality. The title is an impeccable piece of video game mastery. We’re thrilled Scottgames and Lionsgate chose us to lead the development of this project as it’s a game we’ve idolized.”
As mentioned, the developer is partnering with powerhouse studio Lionsgate. Daniel Engelhardt, Senior Vice President of Interactive Ventures & Games at Lionsgate, said, “For as long as we have been talking about virtual reality here at Lionsgate, we’ve dreamed of helping bring Five Nights at Freddy’s to VR,” “The original games are tailor-made for VR. It’s a beloved franchise.”
In Five Nights at Freddy’s, players take on the role of a newly hired security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, which is home to the entertaining animatronic robots Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie the Bunny, Chica the Chicken, and Foxy the Pirate Fox. As you sit in the office switching through the security monitors, Freddy and his friends seemingly wander about the place by themselves, which is in itself unsettling. But when you realize they are coming to pay you a visit, and you have very little power to control the power-locked doors and hallway electricity, so things get a bit jumpy. While the premise sounds simple enough, surviving five nights without getting confronted by a robot is more difficult (and terrifying) than you would think.
Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted is coming to Steam, PSVR, Oculus, and HTC Vive and the original Five Nights at Freddy’s is available on Steam for $4.99.
