This year’s Joker movie trailer is here, and one viewing was all it took to completely sell us on Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role. Directed by Todd Phillips using a screenplay co-written by Phillips and Scott Silver, the film will serve as an origin story for Batman‘s biggest nemesis. As an origin story, Bruce Wayne will be just a small child in the film, meaning we definitely won’t be seeing the Dark Knight appear. Still, for fans of the infamous supervillain, we’re considering Joker to be a must-see movie when it hits the big screen.
Phoenix is the newest actor to portray the Joker in a live-action adaptation, taking the reins from Suicide Squad‘s Jared Leto. Other actors to have played the classic Batman villain include Cesar Romero from the Batman TV series, Jack Nicholson from Tim Burton’s Batman, and of course Heath Ledger from The Dark Knight. Each of these actors have been able to bring something new to the table, making their portrayals unique. It’s clear from the new Joker trailer Phoenix is doing something special with the character as well, and we totally love him as the new Clown Prince of Crime.
The concept of providing an origin story for the Joker might rub some longtime fans of the character the wrong way. It can be argued that the character works best when kept with a mysterious background. However, there shouldn’t be a problem when viewing the movie as a standalone film, unconnected to any other DC project. Though the trailer is just over a couple of minutes, it teases a compelling story about how a street clown named Arthur Fleck evolves into Gotham City’s greatest villain.
Joker premieres in theaters everywhere on Oct. 4, 2019. You can watch the full trailer below!
