The first trailer for the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie has arrived, and to be honest, we aren’t quite sure yet what to make of it. Directed by Jeff Fowler, the movie finally brings the Sega mascot to the big screen, even if it seems a couple decades too late. In the real world surrounded by live-action actors, the titular blue hedgehog will be animated with CGI, inspired by the way he appeared on the Sega Genesis. As a result, Sonic looks, well… kind of atrocious, proving that not every cartoon character translates well into these live-action movies – at least aesthetically.

While Sonic is a little unpleasant to look at, the film still has my interest piqued. As a fan of the classic games, there’s a certain nostalgia to be felt seeing those golden rings on the big screen. Jim Carrey also seems to make a better Dr. Robotnik than expected, and I enjoy how the performance comes across in the trailer. Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic and James Marsden as the local cop appear to be great casting choices as well, but the film seems like it will be carried by Carrey.

Clearly, the trailer may be leaving people with some mixed opinions. These kinds of live-action/animation hybrids based on classic cartoons (or video games, in this case) can either be a big success or a massive failure. At the very least, let’s just hope it isn’t another Garfield: The Movie. In any case, anyone interested in seeing the film can watch it when it hits theaters this November.
