News broke that a film based off the Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) Star Wars property is reportedly in the works at Lucasfilm. The story was first reported on by Buzzfeed who says that the news comes from a few reliable sources very close to the film’s production.
According to those sources, Shutter Island and Alita: Battle Angel scribe Laeta Kalogridis is attached to the project as writer and was hired back in spring last year. It also mentions that she is allegedly close to finishing the first script of an entire KOTOR trilogy.
At Star Wars Celebration last month, Kathleen Kennedy had announced that Lucasfilm is, in fact, working on a Knights of the Old Republic related project saying, “Yes, we are developing something to look at. Right now I have no idea where things might fall, but we have to be careful that there is a cadence to Star Wars that doesn’t start to feel like too much.”
Knights of the Old Republic is a video game released by Bioware on the Xbox back in 2003. It takes place 4,000 years before the rise of the Galactic Empire and is centered around Darth Malak, formerly an apprentice to the Sith Lord Darth Revan, set on taking over the galaxy and wiping out the Republic. The game features an incredible cast of characters including Bastila Shan who, along with Darth Revan and Darth Malak, was mentioned to be featured in the films.
The game is one of my absolute favorites of all time, as it has an amazing story that I always thought would be perfect for a movie. There’s so much story to draw from, not only from the first game, but the equally impressive sequel, Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords, and the volumes upon volumes of graphic novels. I feel like the best thing for Star Wars to do now is to get far away from the universe already established and give us something new and fresh, like what the Mandalorian is doing. KOTOR would be a perfect opportunity to do this.
I’m hoping if a movie is eventually made, that it’ll spark some interest in the canceled Knights of the Old Republic 3 video game being made. It sounded like it had a lot of promise, and a KOTOR caliber game on today’s hardware could be the best thing to happen to Star Wars gaming. As of now tho, nothing’s for sure but the reports sound pretty legitimate so here’s hoping!
