Love or hate the Paranormal Activity films, the Blumhouse produced series remains alive and well as the seventh installment has now been confirmed. Paranormal Activity 7 is currently in development with Paramount Pictures and Blumhouse Productions, both of which also produced and distributed the first six films.
Deadline reported the news from CineEurope in Barcelona today before Paramount gave the audience a first look at Top Gun: Maverick. Studio Chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos said rather straightforwardly, “We are partnering with uber horror producer Jason Blum to bring a new installment of Paranormal Activity.” Unfortunately, those are all of the details we have at the moment. The film’s title, synopsis, and release date are still to come.
The first Paranormal Activity was released in 2007 and centered on a couple who capture supernatural occurrences in their home with cameras. The film utilized low budget methods to achieve the found footage style, and it was generally well-received, bringing in $193.4 million against its meager $15,000 budget. Paranormal Activity spawned five subsequent films: Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), Paranormal Activity 3 (2011), Paranormal Activity 4 (2012), Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014), and Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015). Although each film follows different main characters, they all follow in the first movie’s found footage, mockumentary style and focuses on an evil entity haunting families. With a total budget of $28.015 million, the series has brought in a collective $890.5 million in the box office.
In addition to announcing Paranormal Activity 7 and showing off Top Gun: Maverick, Paramount’s CineEurope presentation also included a more in-depth look at Ang Lee’s sci-fi thriller Gemini Man, starring Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Benedict Wong, and Clive Owen. The film follows a hitman being hunted by a younger cloned version of himself and is set to release on October 11, 2019.
