Recently, rumors hit the web that Crawl director Alexandre Aja was in the running to direct a planned reboot for A Nightmare on Elm Street. No sources were named and the story had in no way been verified, but it generated a lot of excitement on the internet nonetheless. While there’s no way to know (for now) if this is something which may actually happen, Aja is making it clear he’s up for the challenge if Warner Bros. gives him the call to reboot the franchise.
“A Nightmare on Elm Street would be amazing,” Aja says in an interview with CinePOP when asked about remaking other Wes Craven movies beyond The Hills Have Eyes. “One of my most traumatic experiences as a kid was watching A Nightmare on Elm Street and I would love to kind of explore, this is a great world to explore.” He also shuts down the idea of remaking Scream, by insisting Elm Street would be the “most scary one to do today.”

Before directing Crawl, Aja was known to horror fans for remaking The Hills Have Eyes in 2006. While many horror movie reboots are detested by fans, The Hills Have Eyes seems to be among the better-received ones. Aja has also helmed movies like Piranha 3D, Mirrors, Horns, and High Tension. When we consider what happened in 2010, the prospect of another Elm Street reboot is going to make many fans nervous, but the project might be in good hands with Aja at the helm.
In recent months, Heather Langenkamp and Robert Englund have both teased interest in doing one more Elm Street movie. This opens up the door for the possibility of Aja (or another filmmaker) making the next installment a modern sequel, rather than another reboot. If that’s what happens, fans will likely be much more excited about a new Freddy Krueger movie. As for now, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
