It has been confirmed that Taika Waititi will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and serve as director for Thor 4. The film is a follow up to Thor: Ragnarok (2017), also directed by Waititi, which proved to be a massive success both in the box office and with audiences.
Thor: Ragnarok managed to breathe new life into the Thor films, taking on a whole new tone than the first two titles. Although the second film, Thor: The Dark World (2013), was a box office success, it is considered one of the weakest films in the MCU due to the villains and overall plot. Ragnarok was a huge rebound, with Waititi’s trademark humor woven throughout, strong characters, and a plot that advanced both Thor and Hulk. Chris Hemsworth is, of course, expected to take on the role of Thor once again in Thor 4.

With this excellent MCU news comes some not so great news for fans of the Japanese manga Akira. It was previously announced that a live-action film adaptation would be released via Warner Bros. in May 2021 with Taika Waititi on as director. Now that Waititi is taking on Thor 4, scheduling has forced the production of Akira to be delayed. While there is hope that Warner Bros. and Waititi will pick up where they left off after Thor 4, it is not clear what the future holds for the film.
Taika Waititi’s next upcoming film, Jojo Rabbit, will be released later this year and follows a young boy in Hitler’s Army who discovers his mother is hiding a Jewish girl. In addition to directing, Waititi will also take on the role of…Hitler. That should definitely be interesting. The film is expected to release on October 18, 2019.
