Brandon Routh to Return as Superman in ArrowVerse Crossover
The CW

It’s gonna be a Man of Steel party, as two alternate versions of Superman will be featured in this year’s ArrowVerse crossover event on The CW. Called Crisis on Infinite Earths, the event will feature both Brandon Routh and Tyler Hoechlin suited up as Superman, portraying him in different time frames. Routh previously played the Man of Steel in the 2006 superhero movie Superman Returns, and this will be his first time playing Clark Kent since then. Meanwhile, Hoechlin now plays the son of Krypton regularly in the ArrowVerse series Supergirl.

Synopsis: After a long visit to the lost remains of the planet Krypton, the Man of Steel returns to Earth to become the people’s savior once again and reclaim the love of Lois Lane.

While Christopher Reeve before him and Henry Cavill after him were both able to play Superman through the course of multiple movies, Superman Returns was a one-and-done deal for Routh. The actor did a great job in the role and made an excellent Clark Kent, but an official sequel to the film just wasn’t in the cards. For all intents and purposes, it appeared Routh’s time in the red-and-blue tights was forever over following the release of Man of Steel, so this is certainly fantastic news for filmgoers who appreciated the actor’s brief time in the role.

The Crisis on Infinite Earths event will consist of five episodes, with three airing this December and the following two arriving in January 2020.

It’s worth noting Brandon Routh already portrays a different character in the ArrowVerse. On DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Routh plays Ray Palmer, better known as The Atom. According to Deadline, Routh will be playing The Atom in the same crossover event, so it will be interesting to see if they provide a storyline explanation for the similarities.
