Film Fest 919 announced the film lineup and special events for its 2nd edition, October 9-13, 2019 at Silverspot Cinema at University Place.
Showcasing the fall season’s most talked-about films from Cannes, Sundance, Venice, Telluride and Toronto film festivals, audiences will have an opportunity to see Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson; Fernando Meirelles’ The Two Popes starring Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins; James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale; Scott Z. Burns’ The Report starring Adam Driver and Annette Bening; Trey Edward Shultz’ Waves starring Sterling K. Brown and Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite; Pedro Almodovar’s Portrait of a Lady starring Antonio Banderas,; Destin Daniel Cretton’s Just Mercy starring Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx; Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, and more.
FF919 features films representing a wide breadth of genres and spanning 18 countries, including four Official Academy submissions for Foreign Language Film. In addition to screenings and Q&As with filmmakers and local academics, the festival will offer film industry panels and feature celebrity guests and a variety of parties for festival attendees.

Just a few of the exciting special events for 2019 Film Fest 919 include:
Wednesday, October 9
• Celebrate the Opening Night screening of Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, with special guest Martha Kelly (Baskets, Corporate Animals) attending. The screening will be followed by the Opening Night after-party at City Kitchen, hosted by Sally Brown, wife of UNC football coach Mack Brown. Musical entertainment will be provided by local favorite, Liquid Pleasure.
Thursday, October 10
• A special encore screening of the hit film ROCKETMAN, with a special appearance by Ray Williams, the man responsible for discovering Elton John and introducing him to his longtime lyricist partner Bernie Taupin.
Friday, October 11
• Before a full day of movies, start the day with us for coffee at Caffé Driade, 1215-A East Franklin St., Chapel Hill.
• After the movies, join festival-goers at 401 Main, the area’s newest, hottest hangout for a late-night get-together, featuring music by Jasme Kelly Kollective.
Saturday, October 12
• Panel Discussion: Writing For The Screen – Learn about the art of screenwriting from some of the industry’s best, with a special emphasis on adapted screenplays in a panel discussion moderated by Daniel Wallace, author of Big Fish. Panelists to be announced soon. Free admission.
• Film Fest 919 will present the first-ever Distinguished Screenwriter Award to three-time Academy Award®-nominated Screenwriter Anthony McCarten (Darkest Hour, The Theory of Everything), following the screening of Academy Award®-nominated director Fernando Meirelles’ The Two Popes, starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce.

Sunday, October 13
• MEET THE ARTISTS: Joe Letteri, Weta Digital
Special presentation by four-time Academy Award®-winning special effects supervisor and Director of Weta Digital, Joe Letteri. Letteri will share his valuable insights with the audience and discuss how the craft has evolved from the early days of motion capture on The Lord of the Rings all the way through virtual production on Avatar, remote onset capture work on the Planet of the Apes trilogy and the refinement of the facial animation process that allowed Weta Digital to create ‘Thanos,’ ‘Alita’ and the digital human work for Will Smith in Ang Lee’s upcoming Gemini Man.
• Enjoy the Closing Night screening of Taika Waititi’s World War II satire Jojo Rabbit, winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. The screening will be followed by an after-party at Silverspot Cinema.
