The Halloween season is officially here, and many subscription services have plenty of spooky offerings coming our way. Xbox Game Pass got in on the action, with the “Shocktober” list of creeptastic games.
In addition to the titles highlighted below, other Shocktober games also include: Hello Neighbor, We Happy Few, Prey, Darksiders I and II, Vampyr, Oxenfree, and Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition.
1Alien Isolation
Set 15 years after the events of the 1979 Alien film, players take on the role of Amanda Ripley, who goes aboard a space station in search of her mother, Ellen Ripley. The Xenomorph is as fierce as ever, but with no real way to fight back, stealth is key. A must-play for fans of the Alien franchise, and it is sure to get your heart pumping.
2Blair Witch
From Bloober Team, who previously brought us Layers of Fear, Blair Witch lets players explore the iconic Black Hills Forest, near Burkittsville, Maryland. The game takes place three years before the events of the 1999 film, and follows veteran and former police officer Ellis and his emotional support dog, Bullet, as they venture deep into the woods to help search for a missing boy.
3Dead by Daylight
This asymmetrical multiplayer survival horror game allows up to four players to try and escape a fifth player, acting as a killer. The four players get to choose which specific survivor they want to be, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, while the fifth chooses which killer to play as. There is plenty of DLC that should make horror fans happy, such as Michael Myers, Leatherface, Ghostface, and Stranger Things.
4Dead Rising 4
Frank West is at it again, this time battling undead Black Friday shoppers in a Willamette, Colorado, mall. He takes the dangerous mission of documenting the outbreak as a way to clear his name after being labeled a fugitive. Of course, since the game takes place in a mall, there is no shortage of outfits for Frank to try on, as well as zany masks. You can even snap some candid selfies with your new zombie friends. Cheese!
5Doom
DOOM is back, pitting you against hordes of demons once again. The gameplay is a fast-paced frenzy, with exciting and violent ways to mow down your enemies. In addition to single-player, the game features several multiplayer modes and a game editor that lets you create and play your own content.
6Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
This dark fantasy game is as haunting as it is beautiful. Play as Senua, a warrior on a mission to rescue the soul of her deceased lover from a hellish underworld. Guiding her in the journey are the voices in her head, which make for some truly disturbing moments.
7Metro 2033 Redux
If you haven’t yet played the incredible Metro 2033 series, this is a great place to start. Redux is the remastered version of the first two games in the series, Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. Based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novel of the same name, Metro 2033 follows a man named Artyom, who lives in a network of underground tunnels, along with other survivors of a nuclear war. Players must help protect Artyom’s home turf from both mutant and human enemies, while also venturing into the radioactive wasteland above.
Once you’ve played through the first two games, or if you already have, the sequel to Last Light, Metro Exodus, is also available on Xbox Game Pass.
8Mortal Kombat X
In typical MK fashion, pick your favorite fighter and battle it out against your opponent. Play to the death with special attacks and finish him (or her) with some over-the-top gory fatalities. The game offers a story mode, challenge tower, local co-op, and various online modes.
9Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 is a notable entry in the series for being the first to feature a third-person, over-the-shoulder perspective, which went on to influence many games, including 2019’s Resident Evil. Taking place six years after the events of Resident Evil 2, players take on the role of Leon S. Kennedy as he attempts to rescue the president’s daughter after getting kidnapped by a cult.
10Resident Evil: Revelations
Another game from the long-running series, the events of Revelations take place between RE4 and RE5. Primarily play as Jill Valentine (and other characters at times) as she investigates a ghost ship in the Mediterranean Sea. Find area-opening keys, take on puzzle-solving challenges, and go head-to-head with the enemies aboard.
11State of Decay
This horror survival game combines elements of role-playing and strategy games, letting players build their outposts, control other survivors, and take on the undead in either combat or stealth. State of Decay 2 is also available on Xbox Game Pass, which focuses on creating a thriving community and surviving the zombie apocalypse as well.
12The Walking Dead
Based on the comics of the same name, Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead is a critically-acclaimed episodic adventure game, taking place shortly after the zombie crisis begins. The game picks up as convicted criminal Lee saves a young girl named Clementine, who has been separated from her parents. As they go on a mission to reunite the family, the pair encounter all of the dangers of the post-apocalyptic world and force players to make some difficult decisions along the way.
In addition to Season One, Xbox Game Pass also offers Season Two, Season Three (titled A New Frontier), and The Walking Dead: Michonne miniseries.
