Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman in The Batman 2022
Warner Bros. Pictures

The Batman has found its Catwoman, as the upcoming superhero movie will star Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle. According to a new report from Variety, Kravitz is the second name to be officially cast for the project, joining co-star Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne. With the movie set to arrive in theaters on June 25, 2021, it could reportedly start shooting as early as late 2019 or early 2020.

Kravitz is perhaps best known for her role as Bonnie Carlson on the HBO series Big Little Lies. The actress also appeared as Leta Lestrange in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, later reprising the role in the sequel. She has also voiced Catwoman once already in the animated film The Lego Batman Movie, and more recently lent her voice to Marvel by playing Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Kravitz is also one of many actresses to play the iconic character in recent years. The last actress to take on the role of Catwoman in a live-action movie on the big screen was Anne Hathaway in the 2012 sequel The Dark Knight Rises. Previously, it had been notably portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer in Tim Burton’s 1992 movie Batman Returns, which was the official follow-up to his 1989 classic. A younger version of the character was also portrayed by Camren Bicondova in the prequel series Gotham for five seasons.

While no other casting choices have yet been made final, it was previously reported Westworld star Jeffrey Wright was in talks to play James Gordon. Jonah Hill has also been rumored to be in the running as either Penguin or the Riddler, though his casting has also not been officially confirmed. With production set to begin soon, more updates on the project’s cast should be arriving before long.

The Batman will premiere in theaters on June 25, 2021.
