As of now, Xbox Live Gold subscribers can pay a visit to Camp Crystal Lake for free. Every month, new titles are added to the Xbox subscription service, and Friday the 13th: The Game has just been made available, right on time for the Halloween season. Xbox Live Gold users will have until Nov. 15 to download the hit horror game, though you’ll still get to keep it and play it anytime in the future so as long as your Gold subscription remains active.
First released in 2017, Friday the 13th: The Game is primarily an online multiplayer game. With one player controlling Jason Voorhees, up to seven others can play as camp counselors. As Jason, the idea is to murder every teenager on the map, while the counselors must escape by way of car, boat, or calling the police. An offline mode also lets players carry out single player missions as Jason and explore a “Virtual Cabin” filled with Friday the 13th references and props.
For fans of the movie series, Friday the 13th: The Game is a must-play title. It serves as an excellent homage to the films, including most versions of Jason across many of the different movies in the franchise. Many familiar locations are also included, such as Higgins Haven, Packanack Lodge, and the Pinehurst Youth Development Center. Using motion capture provided by Kane Hodder, Jason is even capable of performing many of the very same gruesome kills previously seen in the feature films.
As many fans know, all DLC for the game has been discontinued in the midst of a lawsuit over the rights to the Friday the 13th franchise. Still, the game has developed a solid fan base, and making it free will bring in another wave of new players. If you’re on Xbox Live Gold and you never have played it before, perhaps it’s time to finally check it out.
