Margot Robbie returns to theaters next month as Harley Quinn for her new film Birds of Prey, but don’t expect to see her boyfriend from Suicide Squad appear in the film. As most of us know, Robbie debuted as Harley in Suicide Squad in 2016 with the movie also including a new version of the Joker as portrayed by Jared Leto. The two have since split prior to the events of Birds of Prey, and apparently, Harley is leaving her tattooed ex-lover in the past.
To help promote Bombshell and Birds of Prey, Robbie recently had a chat with Variety to speak about her films. Touching on Birds of Prey, Robbie notes how she “fell in love” with Harley Quinn when first taking on the role for Suicide Squad, though she didn’t understand what the character saw in her abusive boyfriend – the Joker. Perhaps it was this thought that led to Robbie’s interest in this new film, which will see Harley spread her wings after escaping from her toxic relationship with the Clown Prince of Crime.
So, where does that leave the Joker? There’s been no word of Jared Leto appearing in Birds of Prey at this point, though some DC fans may have been expecting him to show up for a cameo. However, according to Robbie, this is not the case, as the actress says the character won’t be appearing in Birds of Prey at all. Because James Gunn is also reinventing Suicide Squad with his own creative take on the story, it’s looking a lot like Leto’s days as the Joker are officially over.
Speaking of the Joker, Robbie also made a point to praise Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in Todd Phillips’ Joker movie, saying the actor “did a phenomenal job” in the role. Still, the actress also makes it clear Birds of Prey will feel nothing at all like Joker and is a very different animal. “I feel like the Joker film was much more grounded. Ours is different. It’s heightened,” Robbie explains.
Birds of Prey hits theaters on Feb. 7. You can read the full article with Robbie at Variety.
