Cyberpunk 2077 / CD Projekt Red

2019 was an incredible year for video games. Death Stranding, Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, Gears 5, The Outer Worlds, Outer Wilds, and Kingdom Hearts III were just some of the amazing games we were given last year. Will 2020 be an even better year for gamers? Well, the first half of the year alone will give 2019 a run for its money…

10Half-Life: Alyx (Valve)

Half-Life 3 is finally here! Well, no, not really. Late last year, Valve teased a Half-Life announcement and followed it up with Half-Life: Alyx, a game that’s not Half-Life 3 and is made to take advantage of VR capabilities. Half-Life: Alyx will be Valve’s flagship VR game and will support all PC compatible VR headsets. Players will step in the boots of Alyx as she and her father, Eli, fight off the Combine. Half-Life: Alyx takes place before Gordon Freeman’s return and the events of Half-Life 2.

The game will feature “gravity gloves.’’ which will work a lot like the gravity gun from Half-Life 2. Familiar elements from the franchise such as puzzles, exploration, and physics-based combat will be utilized as well. Valve considers Half-Life: Alyx to be a full installment in the series and not just a side-story. The game’s run-time is apparently close to that of Half-Life 2

Half-Life: Alyx will come to PC on March 23rd, 2020.

9 Marvel’s Avengers (Square Enix)

The upcoming Marvel’s Avengers game from Crystal Dynamics definitely has the fans divided. On one hand, people are looking forward to a fully fleshed out game featuring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (which hasn’t really been done before), but on the other hand, fans have criticized the designs of the heroes. While the Avengers don’t look like their MCU counterparts, they don’t look like their comic versions either. This makes sense as the developers have come out and said that their take on the Avengers is a totally original take on the group with certain elements drawn from the comics. I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen from the game and can’t wait for the release this September.

Marvel’s Avengers will come to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Google Stadia, and PC on September 4th.

8 Ghosts of Tsushima (Sucker Punch Productions)

Set during the Mongol invasion of Japan during the 1270s, Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghosts of Tsushima will be a third-person action-adventure stealth game centered around Jin Sakai, one of the last samurais stuck on Tsushima Island. Ghosts Of Tsushima was revealed at Paris Games Week in 2017, with a gameplay demo dropping at 2018’s E3, and the most recent trailer was shown during The Game Awards in December of 2019.

Ghosts of Tsushima will launch exclusively on PS4 sometime in 2020.

7 LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (Traveller’s Tales)

The LEGO games from TT are a great source of fun and amusement for basically any age group. The Star Wars titles they released are their biggest examples of this, and The Skywalker Saga looks like it’ll be their biggest and most ambitious title yet. The game will feature LEGO reenactments of all nine main Star Wars installments with 5 levels per movie, bringing the total number to 45 levels in the entire game.

Unlike the The Complete Saga release from 2007, The Skywalker Saga won’t have a single central cantina hub, rather it will feature a range of fully explorable planets featuring many iconic landmarks from The Skywalker Saga. Initially, there will be over 200 playable characters but that number will definitely grow. Another change from the original releases is the new game will get rid of the silent Chaplin-esque comedy and instead go with full voice acting utilizing voice lines from the movies. Billy Dee Williams is confirmed to do additional dialogue for Lando Calrissian.

As of right now, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga doesn’t have a set release but is expected to release in 2020.

6 Halo Infinite

Halo Infinite is the next installment in the space shooter franchise, and will shift the focus back onto Master Chief. First teased at E3 2018, Halo Infinite was once thought to be exclusive to the elusive next-gen Xbox console (which we now know as the Xbox Series X). Since then, franchise’s development director Frank O’Connor clarified, stating that Infinite was always developed as an Xbox One title, but will look amazing on the Series X as well. Halo Infinite will also see Master Chief don an armor set more similar to the one he wore in Halo 2 and 3

Halo Infinite has no set release date yet, but is expected to be released with the Xbox Series X in late 2020.

5 Final Fantasy 7 Remake (Square Enix)

The Final Fantasy 7 remake is a game many people never thought would actually happen. Saying the game had a rocky development would be an understatement. But now, after being announced almost five years ago, the game is finally coming out this April. The remake will be a full remake using fully polygonal graphics as opposed to the original game’s pre-rendered environments.

The game will be released episodically (starting April 10th), but will still cost as much as a full-priced video game (per episode). Final Fantasy VII Remake will reportedly be a timed PS4 exclusive until 2021, but no further details were shared as to when and what consoles the game would eventually release on.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will release on PS4 on April 10th.

4 DOOM Eternal (id Software)

In 2016, the classic DOOM franchise got a revival that most fans loved. The game kept the glorious gore and fast-paced gameplay and added some beautiful visuals and serves as one of the best video game reboots ever. So when DOOM Eternal was announced, naturally people were excited. Sadly, late last year the game was delayed but now we’re just a short month away from its eventual release.

Eternal takes place 2 years after the events of 2016’s DOOM and sees Doom Guy (sorry, Doom Slayer) return to an Earth overrun by the demonic forces of hell. You, as Doom Slayer, must save the human race once again from total destruction and utter damnation. DOOM Eternal will feature a tweak to the enemy designs from the 2016 game, making them more accurate to the creatures in DOOM’s original release. An option to have a centered weapon view, much like the original DOOM, will also be included in the game (this was added post-launch in DOOM 2016). Eternal will feature multiplayer modes as well, like “Battlemode;” a 2v1 PVP pitting 1 player-controlled Doom Slayer against 2 player-controlled demons.

DOOM Eternal is hitting the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Google Stadia, and PC on March 20th, 2020. The game will also be ported to the Nintendo Switch sometime in 2020.

3 The Last of Us Part II (Naughty Dog)

The Last of Us was recently named the best video game of the 2010s. While I don’t necessarily agree with that, I thought the game was great with fun gameplay and a strong narrative. That’s why I’m insanely excited for The Last of Us Part II coming out this year. We were supposed to be getting it very soon (February 21st), but the game was recently delayed until May 29th.

The Last Of Us Part II picks up five years after the events of the first game, and this time the players will play as Ellie as she takes on new threats in the post-apocalyptic United States.

The Last Of Us Part II will release on PS4 on May 29th.

2 Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo)

People have been asking for a new Animal Crossing game basically since Animal Crossing: New Leaf hit the 3DS back in 2012. Eight years later, fans are finally getting their wish. Animal Crossing: New Horizons will launch on the Nintendo Switch on March 20th, 2020. The game will feature staple characters returning like Tom Nook (sorry) and others from the franchise. New Horizons will be implementing features from spin-offs like the crafting system that was introduced in the mobile game, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. New to the game are ‘Nook Miles’, a new in-game currency that is earned from completing objectives and can be used to purchase in-game premium items.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons will feature both local and online co-op of up to four players locally or eight players online. This means you and your friends can occupy the same island together.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be hitting the Nintendo Switch on March 20th.

1 Cyberpunk 2077 (CD Projekt Red)

CD Projekt Red’s first game since The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 launches later this year carrying an enormous amount of hype on its shoulders. After The Witcher 3, people are expecting great things to come out of Cyberpunk 2077 and it seems like CD Projekt Red is doing its damndest to deliver. The studio recently came out and confessed that while the game is completed, they want it to be the best game it can be and because of that, they felt the need to delay it from May until September. This is a long wait, but from what we’ve seen from the gritty, futuristic dystopian open-world RPG, it looks like it’s going to be worth it… also Keanu Reeves is in it.

Cyberpunk 2077 will launch on September 17th, 2020 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Google Stadia, and PC.
