Donkey Kong Country is by far one of the very best video games the Super Nintendo Entertainment System — otherwise known as the SNES — had to offer. So, why is it that the game hasn’t been available to play on Nintendo Switch Online? There might be a small variety of other fun titles from the classic console, but getting Donkey Kong Country onto the Switch for old and new fans alike to experience (or re-experience) the legendary game has been long overdue.

The reveal comes straight from Nintendo, with the company also unveiling two other titles to soon be available to play. Also soon to be included are the SNES wrestling game Natsume Championship Wrestling and the classic NES game The Immortal. Per Nintendo, all three games will be available to play on Nintendo Switch Online for subscribers starting on July 15. Some of us can probably already hear that catchy water-level tune, “Aquatic Ambience,” staring to audibly play in our heads.
The NES and SNES libraries on Nintendo Switch Online essentially serve as a “Netflix for retro video games.” Online subscribers do not need to pay any extra fees to play any of the included titles, which began with a small library but has gradually been adding new titles over time. Donkey Kong Country was obviously among the more popular requests from fans, so this news will undoubtedly bring some joy to old school gamers at a time when a lot of us could really use it.
