Sheriff Dewey Riley won’t be without his wife in the upcoming slasher movie sequel Scream 5, as Courteney Cox has just been confirmed to appear in the film. Following previous reports of her ex-husband David Arquette reprising the role of Dewey, it has now been announced that Cox is on board for the sequel as well, returning to once again play the fan favorite role of Gale Weathers-Riley. The announcement is official, stemming straight from Spyglass Media Group and Paramount Pictures.
“We can’t imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers, and [we’re] so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney,” reads a statement from Radio Silence, the filmmaking team developing the project. “We’re absolute mega fans of her work and we’re so excited to join her in the next chapter of the Scream saga!”
As of now, Arquette and Cox are the only franchise stars to be officially confirmed for Scream 5. However, there seems to be a good chance Neve Campbell will be back in some way as perennial final girl Sidney Prescott. Previously, Campbell has stated that she is in talks with producers about possibly appearing in the film, but she had yet to sign a deal. As much as it will help having Dewey and Gale in the sequel, it still wouldn’t feel right without having Sidney there in one way or another, so let’s hope that will be the next Scream 5 casting announcement made.
Ready or Not helmers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence will direct Scream 5, using a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Veteran franchise writer Kevin Williamson will be executive producing alongside Chad Villella of Radio Silence, and Vanderbilt will also produce with Paul Neinstein and William Sherak of Project X Entertainment. No word yet on a release date — stay tuned.
