‘Doctor Who’ Audiobook Series Brings Back Christopher Eccleston

Christopher Eccleston Doctor Who (BBC/Big Finish)

Christopher Eccleston helped to revive Doctor Who when he became the Ninth Doctor in the franchise’s 2005 reboot, co-starring with Billie Piper as companion Rose Tyler on the popular sci-fi series. After just a single season, Eccleston would leave the series with David Tennant replacing him that same year. Still, for longtime fans of the franchise, Eccleston has his place in the series with his brief but memorable stint as the Ninth Doctor.

Now, 15 years past leaving the franchise, Eccleston will be back to play the role once more for a new audiobook series from Big Finish Productions. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but a video teaser has confirmed that Eccleston will be in the lead role of the new series, which has been dubbed Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures. There’s no word yet on if Piper will also be back as Rose Tyler, but the potential casting does seem likely.

“After 15 years it will be exciting to revisit the Ninth Doctor’s world, bringing back to life a character I love playing,” Eccleston said of the role reprisal. Certainly, the news should also be tremendously exciting for longtime Doctor Who fans who still have a fond nostalgia for the Ninth Doctor. Of course, other Doctor Who stars have been known to make special appearances back in the role years after departing, but this will be Eccleston’s only time playing the part since his single-season run.

Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures will be debuting its first set in May 2021. The audiobooks will be available via digital download, collector’s edition CD, and limited edition gatefold LP vinyl exclusive to the Big Finish website, where you can also pre-order yours now.
