Netflix has confirmed their upcoming Resident Evil adaptation by revealing that the show will follow “the Wesker kids,” Jade and Billie Wesker. Of course, fans of the games will know that Albert Wesker was revealed to be a traitor working with Umbrella in the original Resident Evil, further appearing in many of the sequels for additional showdowns with the lead characters — all the while wearing his trademark sunglasses.

According to an official plot synopsis provided by Netflix, the eight-episode series will be set across two separate timelines. Via Polygon:
“In the first timeline, 14-year-old sisters Jade and Billie Wesker are moved to New Raccoon City. A manufactured, corporate town, forced on them right as adolescence is in full swing. But the more time they spend there, the more they come to realize that the town is more than it seems and their father may be concealing dark secrets. Secrets that could destroy the world.
Cut to the second timeline, well over a decade into the future: there are less than fifteen million people left on Earth. And more than six billion monsters — people and animals infected with the T-virus. Jade, now thirty, struggles to survive in this New World, while the secrets from her past — about her sister, her father and herself — continue to haunt her.”
There’s no indication that the series will be canon with the games, though it might be using events from the Resident Evil series as inspiration for the show. “New Raccoon City” seems to suggest that a new version of the city was built following its destruction by the government in response to the original T-virus outbreak. Following new characters will also give writer Andrew Dabb complete creative freedom with their storylines, while also allowing for references and Easter eggs from the games to be included as well.
Bronwen Hughes will direct the first two episodes. No word yet on when filming will begin. Stay tuned for more info!
