Fans now have two killer dolls named Chucky running amok in the horror genre, and wouldn’t it be amazing to see the two somehow duke it out in one epic crossover movie? After witnessing such films as Freddy vs. Jason and Alien vs. Predator, it’s clear that these kinds of crossover films can be pretty fun, even if it takes a silly premise to get both entities into the same story. There’s no doubt that a Chucky vs. Chucky movie would be beyond ridiculous, but at the same time, there’s no denying that the result would be incredibly entertaining.
When word of the Child’s Play remake was first announced, big fans of the franchise were not exactly thrilled with the news. After all, the original timeline was still ongoing with plans to evolve the series into a television show. There was clearly some concern that the remake would somehow derail the original Chucky series, or at the very least cause some confusion with the more casual horror fans. Fortunately, the remake was mostly well-received as it was different enough from the original series to stand out on its own.
In fact, it’s this stark contrast between the rebooted Child’s Play and the original version that would make a hypothetical crossover that much more entertaining. The old Chucky is a Good Guy doll infused with the soul of a serial killer by way of black magic. Meanwhile, the new Chucky is an animatronic toy with the ability to learn. One is motivated by death and destruction while the other is only looking for a friend. Beyond the shared name, red hair, and short stature, there’s not much else the two Chuckys have in common, and in terms of entertainment for the viewer, that could only help the potential cross-dimensional meeting between the two.
I would imagine that Charles Lee Ray’s Chucky would initially be very unhappy with the Chucky Buddi doll, looking at him as a “Chucky wannabe” that cramps his style. I could also see the old Chucky eventually coming to accept the new Chucky at a point, even training the AI version of himself to help do his evil bidding. Of course, at the end of the day, there probably isn’t enough room in town for the two of them, leading to an inevitable falling out and confrontation between the two at the end. This would give us the exciting Chucky vs. Chucky battle that the fans would be tuning in for. Guaranteed to be just as amusing as it would be violent, there’s just no way a final showdown between the two killer dolls wouldn’t be incredibly awesome.

— Don Mancini (@RealDonMancini) September 21, 2018
Considering that a Child’s Play on Elm Street movie had been discussed in the past, a Chucky vs. Chucky movie could theoretically happen, so as long as everyone involved on both sides was on board. Unfortunately, this is where the potentiality for the project falls apart, as it seems very unlikely the original Child’s Play team would want anything to do with the rebooted Chucky. Longtime franchise writer and director Don Mancini has been vocal with his opinions that Child’s Play should not be remade, noting that he had zero involvement in the reboot. Child’s Play 2 star Christine Elise also told us in an exclusive interview that MGM and Orion Pictures remaking the first film was, quote, “an unbelievably huge dick move.”
So, it’s pretty clear that the Child’s Play originals weren’t too thrilled with the 2019 remake, but maybe their feelings could change in the future. The new Child’s Play took nothing away from the original movies, and may have in fact only generated more excitement for Mancini’s upcoming Chucky series. Both versions of Chucky also have enough differences that there really isn’t much confusion between the two entities with horror fans, and subsequently, there hasn’t been many issues in having both universes exist. Mancini’s next planned Chucky project is still moving forward as planned, despite prior concerns from some fans that a movie reboot would somehow derail the still-ongoing original timeline.
