Scream 5 is the latest movie production affected by the continued spread of COVID-19, but there are no plans to pause filming on the sequel as of yet. Shooting for the anticipated horror sequel is now underway in Wilmington, North Carolina, and a new report from Deadline states that three crew members have tested positive for the virus. Still, filming will move forward as scheduled on Monday after the cast and crew’s weekend break, as those infected have been quarantined from the set. They will also undergo further testing, and contact tracing has been used to contain the spread of the virus.
The Scream 5 production team has been following safety protocols, which includes limiting contact between crew members by dividing them into separate teams. This kept the diagnosed crew members away from the actors along with the directors, assistant directors, and director of photography. If anyone in this group were to become infected, production would be postponed, as was the case with The Batman when Robert Pattinson tested positive. It’s said that this will essentially become the new norm for movie and television productions until an effective vaccine is introduced.
Plot details have been kept largely under wraps about Scream 5, but what’s known is that the movie will feature multiple returning characters. Confirmed to appear in the sequel are Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, David Arquette as Dewey Riley, Courteney Cox as Gale Riley, and Marley Shelton as Scream 4‘s Judy Hicks. Newcomers to the franchise include Jack Quaid, Melissa Barrera, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding, and Mikey Madison. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett direct using a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.
Ghostface will return to the big screen when Scream 5 is released in theaters on Jan. 14, 2022.
