Star Wars and The Addams Family star Oscar Isaac will play Solid Snake in Sony’s movie adaptation of the video game Metal Gear Solid. As first reported by Deadline, Isaac has boarded the project to play the iconic soldier, but Sony has yet to officially comment on the news. While there have been rumors of a Metal Gear Solid movie in the works at Sony for years, this new report suggests that the project is finally coming to fruition.
Isaac is already part of a major franchise with his role as Poe Dameron in the Star Wars series, appearing in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. He also voices Gomez in the animated Addams Family movie and will reprise the role in next year’s sequel. Isaac has also been cast to star in Marvel’s Moon Knight, and MCU-set series that will stream exclusively on Disney+.
Solid Snake was directly inspired by Kurt Russell’s character Snake Plissken from Escape from New York. Had a Metal Gear Solid movie went into development two decades ago, Russell would have been an obvious choice to play the part. As an older Russell is now much more suited to play Santa Claus (which he’s been doing an amazing job with), another actor would be needed to play Solid Snake these days, and given his popularity, Isaac also appears to be a choice that’s rather solid (I’m sorry).
Jodan Vogt-Roberts will direct the Metal Gear Solid movie using a screenplay by Derek Connolly. Avid Arad will produce, and Peter Kang will oversee the project. No word yet on when production will begin, nor is there a potential release date. In the meantime, fans of Isaac can look forward to seeing him in Dune when it premieres in theaters on Oct. 1, 2021.
