Funko Fair Day 1 Wrap-Up: ‘Kong vs Godzilla’, Tons of ‘Star Wars’

Funko Fair Day 1 Feature

Due to the current state of the world, the New York and London Toy Fairs won’t be happening this year. So for Funko fans, the company has kicked off Funko Fair! The event promises nine days of exciting reveals with an estimated total of over 300 reveals happening over the next week and a bit. Day 1 started Tuesday morning with another episode of Funko FUN TV, where hosts Mike Becker (creator of Funko) and Brian Mariotti (President of Funko) shared announcements with an amusement park ride through various themes, hinting at further updates later this week.

The hosts revealed the ‘park map’, which cleverly doubles as an announcement release schedule, showing what fans can anticipate during Funko Fair. The themes include: Anime, Sports and Games, Marvel, Movies, TV, Animation, Disney, Music, and DC Comics in that order.

Next stop on the ride was some first looks at a handful of new Music-themed pops. Icons shown include Bret Michaels (Poison), DEVO, Britney Spears, and Aaliyah. Also shown were members of Fall Out Boy, and then Richie Cunningham (Happy Days), Julius Erving (NBA Legend), and Mookie Betts (MLB star). Not sure the correlation there, but let’s go with it.

One of Funko’s newest lines came next. The ride went through a bunch of Funko Soda reveals from various licenses. Funko Soda figures you can expect to see in stores soon are Werewolf (Scooby-Doo – limited to 7,500 pieces), Beetlejuice (15,000 pieces), Egon Spengler (Ghostbusters – 8,000 pieces), Rosie (The Jetsons – 10,000 pieces), Quisp (Quaker Oats – 10,000 pieces), All Might (My Hero Academia – 20,000 pieces), The Tick (10,000 pieces), and Fearless Leader (Rocky and Bullwinkle – 8,000 pieces).

Next stop on the Funko fun train was a look at the upcoming WWE products. First up (and one of my top picks so far) is Mankind. One third of the Faces of Foley is finally being immortalized in Funko plastic. Joining him in the new series is Chyna, ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin with the belt, and a hint at ‘Stone Cold’ in the Ring with a mystery Pop (hint: you might smell what he’s cooking).

Moving right along to what I’m already dubbing the best announcements so far. We got our first looks at Kong vs Godzilla Pops. There are two of them — one Kong, one Godzilla, and they’re both 10 inches tall. Can. Not. Wait. I’m sure we’ll get a handful of variants later on, but this is definitely starting the line off with a bang.

That concluded the ride, but one more thing was announced at the end. Funko’s Pop! People initiative is moving online and supposedly shipping worldwide. If you’re not sure what Pop! People are, here’s what you need to know. It’s basically a customizable figure setup in their two brick and mortar stores in the US. You can go in, make a Pop! of yourself (or, I guess whatever you want) and you even receive a box with your name one it. This was introduced only a month or so ago, so moving online already is big news. Can’t wait to try that out.

Later on in the day, Funko took to Twitter to continue the announcements with some Star Wars. They announced that Star Wars will finally be getting the Pop! Keychain treatment. Throughout 2021, we’ll be getting at least 17 Star Wars keychains of various characters from the movies, as well as The Mandalorian. Next they announced a re-release of Hoth Luke Skywalker (this time packaged with a Pin!), which will be exclusive to Amazon. The Mandalorian will also get a series of Mystery Minis. Return of the Jedi is getting it’s own set of Pins with Han in Carbonite, Leia (as Boushh), Lando (as Skiff guard) and Jabba (with Chase) seeing release this year. Finally, Rise of Skywalker is getting a Pop! line. Characters include: Rey with a yellow lightsaber, Rey deflecting lighting, Reanimated Palpatine, Ben Solo, and a 10 inch Babu Frik.
