The beloved classic TV series Bewitched is getting yet another movie adaptation, which is expected to follow the show’s storyline. The film is in production with Sony Pictures, and Deadline reports that it will be based on a script from Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett (TV’s MacGyver and 12 Monkeys).

The show originally ran on ABC from 1964 to 1972, lasting eight seasons and 254 episodes. Bewitched followed loving wife (and, eventually, mother) Samantha Stephens (Elizabeth Montgomery) who also happens to be a witch. Her non-magical husband Darrin (Dick York for seasons 1–5 and Dick Sargent for season 6–8), an advertising agency exec, disapproves of any magical ways, which not only causes conflict between the two, but with Samantha’s family as well. The couple are frequently visited by her zany family, which include mother Endora (Agnes Moorehead), father Maurice (Maurice Evans), Aunt Clara (Marion Lorne), and Uncle Arthur (Paul Lynde).

This is not the first movie based on the show, as Columbia Pictures released a film by the same title in 2005. Instead of a straight adaptation, the film follows a woman named Isabel (Nicole Kidman) who was selected to star as Samantha in a TV remake of the classic show, with Will Ferrell playing her on-screen husband Darrin. Bewitched (2005) was considered a box office bomb and earned both leads a Golden Raspberry for “Worst Screen Couple.”

Just recently, there has been a renewed interest in the show as the hit Disney+ series WandaVision parodied the iconic title sequence in the second episode, “Don’t Touch That Dial.”

We are excited to see who will be announced as Samantha and Darrin for the new film. Stay tuned for further updates!
