This year is already off to a strong start with film and TV offerings, and there’s plenty more to come. Here are 10 horror films releasing throughout 2021 that we cannot wait to see. This list only includes films with confirmed release dates and, as we all know, dates are subject to change.
1Spiral: From the Book of Saw
Release Date: May 13, 2021
The next Saw chapter arrives next month with Spiral: From the Book of Saw, directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III, IV) and written by Josh Stolberg (Jigsaw) and Peter Goldfinger. Starring Chris Rock, Max Minghella, and Samuel L. Jackson, the film follows detectives investigating grisly, yet familiar murders.
2Army of the Dead
Release Date: May 14, 2021
From filmmaker Zack Snyder, Netflix’s Army of the Dead takes place following a zombie outbreak that has left Las Vegas in ruins and walled off from the rest of the world. Led by Scott Ward (Dave Bautista), a group plans for the ultimate Vegas heist in an attempt to score big before the government nukes the city into oblivion.
3A Quiet Place Part II
Release Date: May 28, 2021
A Quiet Place Part II will pick up immediately after the events of the first film and focus on the same family, headed by Emily Blunt’s Evelyn Abbott. As well as moving the story forward, it will give us a look back at how the monster apocalypse originally unfolded. John Krasinski, who directs the film, will appear in Part II through flashbacks, so get the tissues ready.
4The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
Release Date: June 4, 2021
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is the next story from Ed and Lorraine Warren’s paranormal investigating adventures and will again star Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson. The film is based on the real-life 1981 “Devil Made Me Do It” court case, which was the first time in U.S. history that a murder defendant claimed demonic possession.
5The Forever Purge
Release Date: July 2, 2021
The fifth and final (or will it be…) installment of The Purge film series arrives this summer, just before the July 4th holiday. Following the events of 2016’s The Purge: Election Year, which saw The Purge come to an end, a couple has an unfortunate run-in with a group refusing to let the tradition die.
6The Night House
Release Date: July 16, 2021
From director David Bruckner (The Ritual, Southbound) comes The Night House, which premiered at Sundance Film Fest 2020. After the untimely death of her husband, Beth (Rebecca Hall) experiences chilling, unexplained events in her lakeside home. She is determined to discover what secrets are hiding in her house and her marriage.
7Don’t Breathe 2
Release Date: August 13, 2021
Stephen Lang returns as Norman (“The Blind Man”), who has been in hiding due to the horrific events of the first film. In a surprising turn, Norman is now raising a young orphaned girl in his remote cabin and fights to save her when she is kidnapped. Don’t Breathe 2 is directed by Rodo Sayagues, writer on the first film, who co-wrote the sequel with Fede Álvarez, director on the original.
8Candyman
Release Date: August 27, 2021
Directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, and DaCosta, Candyman is a direct sequel to the original 1992 film. A Chicago artist (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) who had a brush with the titular character as a child begins to use the Candyman legend as inspiration for his art, with dire consequences.
9Halloween Kills
Release Date: October 15, 2021
Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her family will go head-to-head with Michael Myers yet again. This time, a few familiar names join the fight, including Tommy Doyle, Lindsey Wallace, and Sheriff Leigh Brackett. A follow-up film, Halloween Ends, is already set to release in October 2022.
10Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City
Release Date: November 24, 2021
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is a reboot of the Resident Evil film series and will be based on the first two video games, originally released in 1996 and 1998 via Capcom. Directed by Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down, The Strangers: Prey at Night), the film is to serve as an origin story set in 1998.
