It looks like axe murderer Patrick Batemen is heading to the small screen as American Psycho is getting a TV series adaptation. Directed by Mary Harron and released in 2000, the American Psycho movie is written by Harron and Guinevere Turner, based on a novel by Bret Easton Ellis. It stars Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, a serial murdering investment banker with an intense appreciation for Huey Lewis and the News.
Mila Kunis previously starred in a critically-panned sequel, American Psycho II: All American Girl, in 2002. That movie did not reach the same levels of success as the original and was quickly forgotten. There have been rumors and reports of a third American Psycho movie in the years since, but the project never made its way out of development hell. Now, it seems that the new creative direction for the franchise is to take the story to the small screen.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Lionsgate TV chairman Kevin Beggs addressed the company’s upcoming plans for various projects. Along with Dear White People and Blindspotting, Beggs says an American Psycho TV series is currently in the works. He also adds that a Saw TV series could potentially happen as well, as Lionsgate TV is currently weighing that option. From the interview:
We’ve just wrapped up Dear White People which was a really good experience, Blindspotting is coming up, American Psycho is in development. We’re always exploring what we can do in television with something like the Saw franchise, so that’s a conversation.
American Psycho: The Series appears to be in its early stages of development at this time, so further details are currently unknown. There’s no word yet on if the series will be connected to the original movie or if it will serve as a complete reimagining with a new actor as Patrick Batemen. Stay tuned for more info, and for now, you can revisit the original film’s most iconic scene in the clip below.
