In summer 1979, The Amityville Horror launched a film series that would, surprisingly, continue for decades. The series went from a more serious ghost tale to downright absurd pretty quick. Still, that doesn’t stop the franchise from being an entertaining watch for horror fans.

With that, here are the 7 craziest things in the Amityville Horror sequels. There will be sequel spoilers!

7Unexplained Dollhouse
Amityville Dollhouse (1996)

Republic Pictures / Multicom Entertainment

A newly married couple move into a recently built, secluded desert house with their children. When a large dollhouse replica of the infamous 112 Ocean Avenue appears in the shed, it isn’t long before the daughter moves it into her room. Quickly, evil and chaos reign with unexplained fires, incestuous thoughts, voodoo dolls, a zombie (yes…a zombie), and so on.

In the end, there’s zero explanation for how this dollhouse came to be at a random house far away from New York. Or, why a haunted replica even exists. But, as the eighth film in the series, who needs anything to make sense, amirite?

6The Yard Sale
Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes (1989)

FremantleMedia North America / Multicom Entertainment

Not only does the lamp in The Evil Escapes kick some priest butt (see #3), it is also the source of evil for an entire film! After the opening, which showed the lamp with a demonic face and power, it is sold at a yard sale, of course. A woman, Helen (Peggy McCay), snatches it up for $100 and sends it to her sister Nancy (Patty Duke) as a gag gift. Nancy receives the lamp, which goes on to terrorize her family, as Helen succumbs to her own lamp-related injury. But still, $100 is a bargain.

5Appliance Massacre
Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes (1989)

FremantleMedia North America / Multicom Entertainment

As a household appliance itself, it’s only natural for a possessed lamp to hold power over other appliances and tools. Right? As the appliance massacre begins, we see a friend of Helen’s granddaughter get the ole garbage disposal hand chop. We know it’s coming, yet we still can’t help but cringe.

Meanwhile, grandson Brian (Aron Eisenberg) noses around his grandmother’s basement, finding a chainsaw. After picking it up, it suddenly turns on, thrashing around all over the room as Brian is unable to control it. The scene seems to go on longer than needed, which makes it all the better.

4Peaches Attacks
Amityville 1992: It’s About Time (1992)

FremantleMedia North America / Multicom Entertainment

If you haven’t noticed, random haunted objects are definitely the theme for the series, and It’s About Time is no exception. As you can guess by the title, this time it is a clock from 112 Ocean Avenue. The clock makes its way to California as a man, Jacob (Stephen Macht), travels on business and brings it home.

As the clock begins to get its hooks into the family, Jacob is cornered by his neighbor and her large dog, Peaches, while on a jog. After a tense standoff, Peaches is released from her grasp and viciously attacks Jacob’s leg. The scene is sure to make you cringe.

So, it seems the clock not only manipulates time, but can also possess neighbors’ pets, making them vicious. Or, not, because we later find out Peaches and her owner were never really there yet the damage is real…whoa.

3Priest vs Lamp
Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes (1989)

FremantleMedia North America / Multicom Entertainment

To the film’s credit, Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes has the best opening of all the sequels. It is that opening that makes our list! A group of priests gather at the Amityville house to bless it and try to rid the structure of evil. Unfortunately for one priest (Fredric Lehne), he is no match for the evil flowing through…a lamp. As a demonic face appears in the bulb, a mega surge throws the holy man across the room. It is moments like this that make the series cheesy fun.

2If I Could Turn Back Time
Amityville 1992: It’s About Time (1992)

FremantleMedia North America / Multicom Entertainment

As we already clarified, the clock in It’s About Time is inexplicably a far-reaching supernatural force. Another great example of this is when it defends itself from destruction by reversing time, effectively turning Jacob’s teenage son Rusty (Damon Martin) into a toddler in the blink of an eye. The clock pulls the same trick again with Jacob’s ex-girlfriend (Shawn Weatherly), only speeding up time to make her elderly. Apparently, the clock is so souped-up on evil that its power knows no bounds.

1Brotherly Love
Amityville II: The Possession (1982)

Orion Pictures

Amityville II is the darkest of the sequels, with disturbing scenes of child abuse, domestic violence, and even incest. The event that makes our list is when possessed teenager Sonny (Jack Magner) has his younger sister Patricia (Diane Franklin) pose nude, which leads to a sexual encounter between the siblings. The scene was originally much more graphic, however…thankfully…parts were cut for the final version.
