‘Far Cry 6’ Gets an October Release Date & Two New Trailers

Ubisoft Toronto

Ahead of E3, Ubisoft took to YouTube to showcase the world premiere for gameplay from their upcoming game, Far Cry 6. We got two new trailers showcasing the antagonistic Anton Castillo and his son Diego. We also got a look at the new gameplay mechanics, weapons, vehicles, and supporting characters as well as the main protagonist. Ubisoft promises Far Cry 6 to be their most ambitious open world yet.

Far Cry 6 is set on the fictional Caribbean island of Yara. Yara is ruled as a dictatorship by ‘El Presidente’ Anton Castillo, played by Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, The Mandalorian). Castillo is conditioning his son, Diego (Anthony Gonzalez), to follow in his father’s footsteps and rule over Yara when the time comes. In Far Cry 6, the player steps into the boots of Dani Rojas, a young military dropout-turned-Guerilla fighter who turns her desperation to leave Yara into fuel for an uprising against Carillo and his forces.

The Far Cry showcase showed off a couple things of note, the biggest of which being a customizable main character. You can choose between male and female and fully customize their look, a feature introduced in the series’ previous main installment. The game will feature fully customizable DIY vehicles and weapons, including a CD launcher that endlessly plays “Macarena.” There seems to be a big emphasis on ‘arsenal’ this time around, with the trailer boasting weapons made out of motorcycle parts and backpacks that fire missiles. It feels they’re skirting the line of reality and ridiculousness, and I’m here for it.

For the first time in the series, players will be able to see their character during cutscenes, making those customization options actually mean something. The game also adds RPG elements with deception mechanics like a bribe system and the ability to hide your weapons if an enemy passes by.

So far, Far Cry 6 is shaping up to be a promising entry to the franchise. From what we see in the trailers, the upcoming game is changing up it’s formulaic Far Cry gameplay and evolve into something bigger and better. Jet packs and missile-launching backpacks are great, but what I’m most excited for is the adorable sausage dog companion named Chorizo (and yes, you can pet them).

After delays due to the pandemic, Far Cry 6 is finally set to launch on October 7th. The game will come to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Google Stadia, Amazon Luna, and PC.
