The Garbage Pail Kids are heading to HBO Max. Originally a Topps trading card series that spoofed Cabbage Patch Dolls, each Garbage Pail Kids card featured some kind of gross character with a pun-based name to match. They were widely controversial at the time and even banned from many schools, but they forever made their mark on pop culture.
In the 1980s, there was a Garbage Pail Kids cartoon series made, though it was never released in the United States due to the controversy. There was, however, an infamous live-action adaptation that was also released in 1987. Though the film has been universally panned, with a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it has a bit of a cult following of its own.
Now, Danny McBride and his Rough House Pictures partner David Gordon Green — the team behind Halloween (2018) and the upcoming sequels Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends — have decided that the time is right for the Garbage Pail Kids to return. The filmmakers are teaming up with Topps and Tornante to develop a new animated series adaption for HBO Max. Per THR, the project is inspired by the pair’s love for the GPK and Saturday morning cartoons, and the new show is expected to be family-friendly.

McBride and Green will write and co-create the GPK cartoon with Josh Bycel (Solar Opposites). They also executive produce alongside Noel Bright and Steven A. Cohen of Tornante TV. No names have been announced for the voice cast so it’s unclear if McBride intends to voice any of the characters. At this point, he hasn’t had a role in the new Halloween movies he’s made with Green.
It’s unclear when the new animated series will arrive on HBO Max. You can watch the official trailer for The Garbage Pail Kids Movie below.
