Edit: This article has been updated with the official title, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and the new release date.
It was revealed last year that Seth Rogen would be rebooting the TMNT franchise, with a CG animated film for Nickelodeon. Today on Twitter, Rogen, who will be producing, confirms the release date will be August 11, 2023. Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs the Machines) is set to direct with a script written by Brendan O’Brien (Neighbors, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising).
In today’s reveal, Rogen posted a piece of paper with notes jotted down, in a ’90s throwback style many of us will immediately recognize. Within the notes, which has “Leonardo, Aug 11th, 2023, Science 1” at the top, he has “apologize to April,” “Honor, Loyalty,” “Discipline,” “Who am I?,” as well as types of mutations and doodles.

In a follow-up tweet, Rogen says, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles… Aug 11 2023 (Leo takes notes like I used to).” Cowabunga, dudes.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is going to be a coming-of-age story, which Rogen knows a thing or two about. While talking with Insider in 2020, he stated, “When I look at Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the teenage part was weirdly what stuck out to me the most. I think one thing we’ve been pretty consistently good at over the years is creating material about teenagers, from Blockers, Good Boys,’ and Superbad. That was really what became exciting for us is how do we make a great action-adventure movie that’s also a great teenage movie.”
Along with Rogen, Point Grey Pictures’ Evan Goldberg and James Weaver are also producing, with Paramount Pictures handling distribution on the film.
The last TMNT reboot film to hit theaters was the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2014, directed by Jonathan Liebesman and written by Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec, and Evan Daugherty. The film was produced by Michael Bay under the Platinum Dunes banner and went on to have a sequel in 2016, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. The film, directed by Dave Green and written by Appelbaum and Nemec, did not perform as well as its predecessor in the box office, bringing in $245.6 million on a $135 million budget, compared to 2014’s $493.3 million box office on a $150 million budget.
