The Munsters is getting rebooted by Rob Zombie. Several months back, rumors began to circulate that Zombie was preparing to reboot The Munsters with a new film adaptation starring some of his frequent collaborators. He has stayed quiet on the subject in the time since, but finally breaking his silence, Zombie officially confirmed the project with a post shared to Instagram on Monday.
In the image is the official logo for the film. Utilizing the same creepy Munsters font as seen from the TV series, the title is spelled in green writing. “A Rob Zombie Film” is also displayed above the title, confirming that this is going to be a movie with Zombie at the helm. He also promised additional information is soon to come in the photo’s caption.
“Attention Boils and Ghouls! The rumors are true! My ext film project will be the one I’ve been chasing for 20 years! THE MUNSTERS! Stay tuned for exciting details as things progress!” writes the Halloween remake director. He also includes the hashtag #universalstudios, confirming that Univeral is the studio backing the movie.
The rumors that Zombie was rebooting The Munsters stem from an unconfirmed report (via Murphy’s Multiverse) that also claimed that Sheri Moon Zombie and Jeff Daniel Phillips would be playing Lily and Herman Munster, respectively. Dan Roebuck, Jorge Garcia, Richard Brake, and Cassandra “Elvira” Peterson were also rumored to be in the cast in undisclosed roles. While the casting hasn’t yet been confirmed, the original report’s claims that Zombie was helming a Munsters reboot for Universal Pictures has just been proven genuine, so it seems possible.
There’s no word yet on what exactly Zombie is planning. He is certainly best known for pushing the limits of what can be shown in R-rated movies, but that’s not exactly fitting of something like The Munsters. As such a big fan of the show, Zombie may opt to go in another direction for a reboot that’s closer in spirit to the family-friendly TV series. For now, fans will have to wait for Zombie to divulge more information about the project. You can check out his original Instagram post from Zombie on Instagram.
